Rivian R1S: Adventure & Luxury Combined

The SUV that can do a school run on Monday and tackle the Rubicon Trail on Saturday.

Rivian R1S Utility

When Rivian launched the R1S, it wasn't just competing with other EVs; it was aiming for the Range Rover and the Cadillac Escalade. By combining Silicon Valley tech with rugged, off-road engineering, Rivian has created what many consider to be the most versatile vehicle currently on sale. But for a family of seven, is it actually practical, or is it just expensive jewelry?

The Dual-Motor vs. Quad-Motor Debate

Rivian offers several drive configurations. The legendary **Quad-Motor** provides 835 horsepower and can do a 0-60 mph sprint in 3.0 seconds—math that simply shouldn't apply to a 7,000-lb SUV. However, for most buyers, the new **Dual-Motor Performance** is the better buy. It's more efficient, offers similar real-world range (up to 352 miles with the Max Pack), and is still "scary fast" for a family vehicle.

True 3-Row Capability

Unlike the Tesla Model X, which has a cramped third row, the R1S is a boxy, upright beast. This design allows for legitimate headroom in the very back. Is it as spacious as a Chevy Suburban? No. But it is significantly more comfortable for teenagers than almost any other electric SUV on the market. With the seats folded flat, the cargo space is cavernous, and the "frunk" adds another 11 cubic feet of secure storage.

The Hydraulic Advantage

One of the R1S's secret weapons is its **Kinetic Roll Control** system. Instead of traditional anti-roll bars, it uses a complex hydraulic system to link the four dampers. This allows the car to be incredibly soft and compliant on the highway, yet stay completely flat through a sharp corner. It is a technology usually found on McLaren supercars, and it gives the R1S a driving feel that belies its massive weight.

Adventure Tech

Every Rivian comes with an on-board air compressor. You can lower your tire pressure to drive on sand or trails, and then use the built-in hose in the trunk to pump them back up before hitting the highway. It’s a small detail that shows the brand truly understands its "adventure" niche.

The Charging Transition

Historically, Rivians had to rely on the CCS charging network. However, starting in 2024, Rivian owners gained access to the **Tesla Supercharger network** via an adapter. In 2025, the cars will switch to the NACS (Tesla) port natively. This transition has overnight made the R1S a much better road-trip vehicle, as the Tesla network is vastly more reliable than third-party alternatives.

Interior Minimalism

The interior is a mix of sustainable wood, high-quality vegan leather, and massive screens. There are almost no physical buttons. While the software is beautiful and incredibly fast, some basic tasks (like adjusting the air vents or opening the glovebox) require searching through a menu. It’s a polarizing choice that might frustrate buyers coming from a traditional BMW or Lexus.

Final Thought: The Rivian R1S is the most capable family vehicle ever built. It is expensive, yes, but it replaces both a luxury sedan and a rugged 4x4, doing the job of two cars better than most do the job of one.
