The Rivian R1S is a towing monster. With up to 835 horsepower and instant torque, pulling a 7,000 lb trailer feels effortless. The vehicle barely notices the weight when accelerating or climbing grades. But the battery definitely notices the aerodynamic drag.

The Range Penalty

When you hook up a massive, boxy trailer to any vehicle, the energy required to push it through the air increases exponentially at highway speeds. Why does range change?

  • Speed: Unlike gas cars, EVs are most efficient in stop-and-go city traffic thanks to regenerative braking. Highway speeds above 65mph significantly drain range due to wind resistance.
  • Temperature: Cold weather slows battery chemistry and requires energy to heat the cabin, which can slash range by 20-30%.

Planning Your Stops

If you plan on towing long distances with the R1S, you must factor in more frequent charging stops. Fortunately, Rivian now has access to the Tesla Supercharger network, making it much easier to find reliable charging along your route. However, you will likely still need to unhitch the trailer at most stations, which adds time to your journey.
